Don't mess with my friends

About a year ago my friend Stephen from Bristol, England called me up with a request.  He said that he was almost robbed at knifepoint while doing an early morning jog and would like for me to buy him a taser for self defense.  He managed to head butt the would-be robber and run away and just wanted something for self defense if this ever happened again.  I looked it up on the internet and learned that with a taser you have to buy cartridges every time you shoot it.  And not only is it illegal in England but it would cost him $25 and I would have to take the time to buy it and send it knowing that it’s not legal.

I decided that I was more comfortable breaking the law by sending him a stun gun, since that is also illegal.  We decided on a model that looks like a cell phone.  It gets shipped to my house and my curious brother got it out and was the first one to try it.  He didn’t stun anyone, but the sound was so loud, it scared everyone in the room.  You jump just hearing the sound of it. That blue stream of volts is scary to look at also.  So I send him 2 packages, one with the “cell phone” and one with mace.  If customs really inspected the packages at least he had a better chance of receiving something by sending them separately.  Thankfully, he received both packages no problem.

I have asked him numerous times through the year if he’s had a chance to use it, always the same answer….. No, not yet.  We talked yesterday and he finally had a different answer.  He was doing some late night shopping at the 24 hour Tesco, similar to our Wal-mart, he was walking towards his car minding his own business.  There was a group of teens, 2 girls and 3 boys.  One of the guys asked him if he had a cigarette.  Stephen responded, “no I don’t smoke mate.”  Another guy said, “can you spare some change for a fag(cigarette).” Stephen responded with “NO.”

This is when the swearing started.  The thugs said “dont be an effing dickhead you can spare a few quid.”  Stephen says, “what you lot doing at this time of the day anyway you should all be in bed.”   He proceeded to ignore them and got in his car.  One of the girls kicked his car, so he got out to check for damage.  He probably should have just left then, but he knew he had a special cell phone in his pocket.   One of the guys got up in his face yelling and cursing and this is when Stephen took out the stun gun and shoved the guy off by pushing it into his neck.  The hot head went down screaming and wailing like a little girl.  All of his “friends” took off running leaving him there crying on the ground.  Stephen then got in his car and laughed all the way home.

Stun guns leave burn marks on the skin.  So this thug has to either wear turtlenecks or explain that he got stunned late one night while trying to intimidate an innocent person to give him some money.  Next time let’s hope they think twice before harassing a late night shopper.  I think that stun guns and tasers should be legal in England.  I’m very happy to be a part of this wonderful self defense story.   The moral of the story is, don’t mess with my friends, they are prepared just like an American.

Addendum:
My mom scolded me last night after publishing this post for admitting to not the most legal activity.  I lived in England before and I felt less safe in a country that does not have guns or self defense devices.  In a country where big brother is alive and well recording most all activity on CCTV, I saw many, many times on the local news, random thugs beating up innocent people after a night out drinking.  During the world cup, I wouldn't leave the house when England was playing.   I felt scared for my safety.  In England, they finish high school at the age of 16.  There are many teens who have nothing else to do but terrorize innocent people.  I do not feel any remorse for sending my friend a device to help him protect himself from these thugs.  He's not going around looking for trouble or advertising that he has a special 'cell phone'.  He used this stun gun in the proper manner when it became necessary.  So mom, lighten up and just be thankful that you live in a country where you can shoot and kill an attacker and not be prosecuted.
